Baby Keem rapped from above Vegas marquee as the entrance of his packed Kemba Live Show for Baby Keem’s Casino Tour. Keem is from Vegas. The idea being from Vegas instead of acting like a mob boss gave Vegas a strip-mall neighborhood aura which was almost meager in its sprawl.
I did the most basic: Baby Keem is the new generation’s Hip Hop star. Can Baby Keem rap live?
Dr. Dre brought Kendrick Lamar with Aftermath via Top Dawg. Kendrick Lamar’s first act from PGLang after leaving Top Dawg: Baby Keem. Baby Keem rapped polysyllabic patterns with clarity above an adoring, large audience.
While technically checking out Keem, I realized Wednesday’s Baby Keem Casino show is the first time I’ve ever thought Baby Keem sounded like Kendrick Lamar. Baby Keem is Kendrick Lamar’s artist. Baby Keem is with Kendrick’s PG Lang creative communications company.
I saw Baby Keem with Kendrick at Schottenstein Center during Kendrick’s critically acclaimed the Big Stepper’s Tour, In the 2022 arena show, I felt like Baby Keem successfully gave Kendrick’s audience a Lil Baby, Playboy Carti, and Run DMC vibe. We’d experienced Kendrick artistic angles which transformed the Schott into a performance art space. In 2022, Kendrick and Keem played Family Ties which sounds like any kid living out his dream of rapping with the most important rapper in the most contemporary sound. Kendrick and Baby Keem together reminded everyone of achieving the Hip Hop dream.
During Baby Keem’s solo set Wednesday in 2026 at Kemba, I started contemplating the idea of Kendrick Lamar signing his second cousin and his second cousin rapping like Kendrick Lamar.
Baby Keem is Kendrick Lamar’s cousin. Family Ties had won a Grammy. Baby Keem didn’t sound like Kendrick last time I saw Keem.
At Kemba is 2026. I thought about Kool G Rap influencing Mobb Deep, Nas, and AZ in Queens.
Baby Keem can rap. Baby Keem’s album Melodic Blue is Platinum. Baby Keem is Kendrick Lamar’s cousin.
Family Ties sold 6 million records. Baby Keem isn’t a potential star affiliated with the biggest rapper. Baby Keem is a star.
Wednesday at Kemba….Baby Keem kept rapping. Kemba Live was completely enthralled.
Baby Keem had a Vegas showgirl backup woman dancer. I could tell she was attractive in shape but she wasn’t ever quite completely treated like a video vixen. She fit the Casino context without seeming like a pointless half-naked women because Keem is from Vegas.
Keem’s Casino show evening progressed.
Baby Keem’s bass hit loud in the sound-system. Keem performed Mosh Pits while Kemba jumped up and down. I thought about Turnstile, and Tyler, the Creator’s effect on Hip Hop culture. Kemba Live knew every word. I was still kinda adjusting my perceptions because Baby Keem didn’t sound like Kendrick Lamar from the songs I knew.
After showing technical dexterity, Baby Keem soon sounded like Lil Uzi Vert was his natural peer. Until Wednesday, I’d assumed the aesthetic idea of Baby Keem is someone who performs in the melodic and mumble rap currents. Kendrick into Lil Uzi Vert makes sense in every relevant contemporary radio playlist. After I thought about the idea of Lil Uzi Vert as a song writer, and composer.
Baby Keem played his Too Short joint from Casino $ex Appeal. I looked at the women dancer who was kinda vague but still visibly attractive. She looked like she could be “Blow Job Betty” but Baby Keem didn’t quite visit Too Short’s vulgarity. Keem knew he had rapped with Too Short. She was a dime but Keem and the lady were just people from Vegas.
My music critic brain attempted assemble market vs. culture. Baby Keem is from Vegas and then relocated to Los Angeles. Kendrick Lamar is Dr. Dre’s prodigy. Baby Keem isn’t acting like a gangsta but his background did include poverty and experiencing violence. Baby Keem likes Soccer, and video games. Baby Keem is Kendrick Lamar’s cousin. Kendrick Lamar knows his cousin’s life.
Kemba was packed and weren’t contemplating if Kendrick Lamar’s cousin should rap like Kendrick Lamar. Kemba’s audience knew Baby Keem’s lyrics. Keem’s flow was derived from Kendrick’s song DNA rhyme schemes.
We’d heard Good Flirts earlier where Kendrick and Baby Keem describe women who are seductive in interaction.
Keem was playing Family Ties while standing over screen which displayed the words Family Ties which then said other phrases. Keem shouted out Columbus at the beginning of every song and then could professionally perform music. I comprehended the logic of a rapper who is associated with Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Uzi Vert rocking a packed room who loved his music. Keem played Bad Habits.
I objectively knew Keem was having an exceptional evening where PGLANG’s vision reached the current audience. Keem then rapped a poignant song while a picture of an old black lady rotated into an RIP message. Everyone in the room started vocally discussing if Keem’s mom or grandma died. We all weren’t sure who the RIP was for, but we cared about Baby Keem’s mourning.
Everything shut down for a second, Keem wasn’t standing above everyone now. Keem spoke with no-frills from the stage like a coffee shop poet. Baby Keem intimately said No Blame which is the last song from Keem’s newest released Casino. The song is an acknowledgment of his mom’s humanity which reach a Saul William’s rapport with the audience.
Baby Keem then immediately walked off the stage and the house lights turned on. We were all impressed at the abrupt departure. We went from thinking Kendrick Lamar’s PGLang successfully found a Kendrick Lamar/Uzi Vert rapper into caring about Baby Keem’s mom. We didn’t know if she’d survived domestic abuse. We knew Baby Keem cared about Baby Keem’s mom as person.
Half the room walked out because the lights were on. Half the room waited to see if Baby Keem would freestyle over Kendrick’s Not Like Us. The abrupt conclusion changed the room from a: Baby Keem is a new rapper in the correct lane into: I care about Baby Keem as a person.
Baby Keem didn’t return to the stage after playing No Blame. We all felt like we’d experienced art instead of major label successfully understanding market.
